The success story of the audiobook

We not only develop our own audiobook projects, but are increasingly more involved in working with publishers, which have so far been involved in solely marketing traditional reading material.

Audiobooks are in vogue! So much so in fact that some believe the audiobook could gradually supersede the traditional reading book in the marketplace.
However, precisely the opposite is true! In countries where the audiobook has become established it can be noted that these markets are independent of each other. It even seems as if the new customer-base for audiobooks is also frequently purchasing reading books, probably as gifts, thereby providing an additional boost to this market.

The history and development of the audiobook

It all started in the USA in 1931 with the Congress for Audiobooks, whose purpose was to help blind adults who couldn't read traditional books.
In the 1960s the educational value for people with reading disabilities, learning disabilities in general and dyslexia was recognised.
In 1980 the audiobook market grew to a multi-billion dollar business. In the meantime the educational benefit for normally-sighted people and people without learning difficulties was also recognised.
Significant differences in a child's development in particular were evident between those who predominantly had access to audiobooks and reading books compared with those mainly geared towards television. Children who had considerable contact with audiobooks and little or no access to the television developed better spiritually, had a considerably better education and a much more creative and bright intellect.

Today audiobooks are also increasingly used by avid readers to simply relieve eye strain or by those who are interested but are not so keen on reading themselves.
